Top 10 Unique Places in Australia - Shelly Burks - Travel Blogger

Are you in the process of planning your upcoming vacation in Australia?

We have curated a list of the top 10 destinations in the country that we highly recommend adding to your must-visit places.

EXMOUTH

Exmouth secures its place among the top 10 best destinations in Australia due to its extraordinary marine life. I highly recommend booking multiple boat tours and swimming experiences in Exmouth, as the encounters with marine wildlife are nothing short of incredible.

Swimming alongside manta rays, whale sharks, and turtles was an experience beyond words, and the sheer beauty of being in the water with these majestic creatures was surreal.

When it comes to finding the ultimate beach in Exmouth, look no further than Turquoise Bay. Living up to its name, the water boasts an enchanting turquoise hue that is simply breathtaking. It's the perfect spot for swimming, snorkeling, and immersing yourself in a vibrant underwater world teeming with fish and marine life.

ULURU

One of Australia's most extraordinary and unparalleled experiences lies in exploring the remote Red Centre. With its awe-inspiring landscapes and rich indigenous culture, a visit to Uluru and the Red Centre ranks among the top must-do activities in Australia.

Uluru itself is a true marvel, and the surrounding national park offers endless opportunities for outdoor activities, exploration, hiking, and camping. To fully immerse yourself in this remarkable area, I recommend setting aside a minimum of 3 days.

The vibrant red hues of Uluru are most captivating during sunset, but it's important to note that it can get crowded. To secure a prime spot in the parking lot, I suggest arriving at least 40 minutes before sunset.

Immerse yourself in pure magic by experiencing the Field of Light installation, which provides an enchanting sunset viewpoint. Tickets are available for $44, or you can upgrade to the Star Pass experience for $98, which includes sunset drinks, canapés, and access to the captivating Field of Light display.

While there are numerous trails and walking paths in the Uluru Kata-Tjuta National Park, I highly recommend embarking on the Uluru Base Walk. It offers a unique opportunity to get up close to Uluru, truly grasp its immense size, and feel the ancient, mystical ambiance that sets this place apart from any other.

BYRON BAY

Byron Bay stands out as one of Australia's most renowned and frequently visited bucket list destinations, and it's not difficult to see why. The vibrant vegan and vegetarian cafes, breathtaking beaches, lush rainforests, and laid-back atmosphere contribute to its undeniable allure.

While Byron Bay is often associated with its stunning beaches and bustling cafe scene, make sure you don't overlook the hidden gems of the Byron Bay Hinterland. Picture charming villages nestled amidst rolling green hills, enchanting waterfalls, and verdant rainforests that epitomize the beauty of this region.

A visit to the picturesque town of Bangalow is a must. Indulge in a delectable lunch and explore the boutique shops that add character to the area. Additionally, take a scenic drive to Bexhill Quarry, where you'll discover a uniquely captivating aqua blue pool.

While swimming is not recommended due to its pH levels, dipping your feet in and capturing some delightful photos will make the journey well worthwhile.

Byron Bay is renowned for its array of Instagram-worthy cafes. With numerous fantastic options available, some of our personal favorites include Folk Cafe, Pressed Pantry, Combi, Bay Leaf, The Farm, The Top Shop, and The General Store.

In terms of accommodations, don't limit yourself to traditional hotels. Byron Bay offers a plethora of Airbnb options that are tailor-made for your Instagram feed. Consider Bask & Stow, Elements, The Bower, The Atlantic, Raes on Wategos, and Byron Beach Abodes for a truly memorable and aesthetically pleasing stay.

MORETON ISLAND

We are incredibly fortunate to have this little piece of paradise right on our doorstep along the Queensland Coast. Moreton Island, just a 75-minute ferry ride from Brisbane, is a dream come true for nature lovers.

With its magnificent Australian wildlife, pristine beaches, and being a sand island accessible only by 4WD, it offers loads of fun and adventure.

The mesmerizing Tangalooma shipwrecks are an absolute must-see. For the ultimate Australian bucket list experience, take to the skies in a helicopter and witness the shipwrecks from above. Alternatively, you can explore them up close by snorkeling in the surrounding waters.

Moreton Island is renowned for its shipwrecks and snorkeling opportunities, but that's not all it has to offer. You can also enjoy camping, experience the unique thrill of dolphin feeding, and relax on its beautiful beaches, creating the perfect tropical getaway.

LUCKY BAY AND WHARTON BEACH

There's nothing quite like the ultimate Australian bucket list experience of basking on pristine white sand beaches, immersing in turquoise blue waters, and sharing unforgettable moments with kangaroos at Lucky Bay! Located just 60km from Esperance, Lucky Bay is an absolute must-visit destination on any Western Australia bucket list.

Make your way to the beach in your car and spend a delightful afternoon in the company of these adorable creatures. The best part is that the kangaroos are incredibly friendly, allowing you to sit beside them, stroke their soft fur, and be sure to capture countless photos of these incredible encounters.

Venture further east to Wharton Beach, where you'll encounter some of the clearest water you've ever laid eyes on. It's personally my favorite beach in the entire world! Don't miss the opportunity to visit the lookout at the eastern end of the beach, offering an awe-inspiring view of the bay and its pristine, powdery white sands.

KAKADU NATIONAL PARK

Kakadu National Park, situated in Australia's Northern Territory, captivated us with its astonishingly diverse landscape that surpassed all expectations.

With its abundant wetlands, meandering rivers, towering gorges, and awe-inspiring waterholes, Kakadu is a haven for adventurers, offering the perfect opportunity to cool off in a refreshing waterhole after a day of exploration.

Maguk Falls and Gunlom Falls are absolute must-visit destinations within Kakadu National Park. The pristine waters are remarkably clear, creating an ideal environment for swimming and relaxation.

For those seeking to witness crocodiles in their natural habitat, Kakadu is an unparalleled destination.

The park offers remarkable sunrise and sunset Yellow Water Cruises, as well as daytime cruises where you can witness an extraordinary variety of wildlife, including these magnificent reptiles. We were fortunate enough to have an up-close encounter with crocodiles, leaving us in awe.

And let's not forget the breathtaking experience of witnessing the stunning red hues of the sunset over the landscape from Nawurlandja Lookout. It provided a picturesque conclusion to our day, with the rocks turning crimson as the moon gracefully rose above us.

WHITEHAVEN BEACH, WHITSUNDAYS

Whitehaven Beach is undoubtedly the most sought-after beach in the Whitsundays and a must-visit destination when traveling to Queensland.

While exploring the magnificent Whitsundays is an experience in itself, don't miss the opportunity to embark on a catamaran journey to Whitehaven Beach.

Here's a top tip for your visit: instead of staying on the main beach, venture towards the enchanting meeting point of Whitehaven Beach and Inlet Hill, where a hidden gem awaits—Betty Beach. This secluded stretch of shoreline in the heart of the Whitsundays is a true treasure waiting to be discovered.

Prepare to be mesmerized by the pristine, powdery white sand and the captivating turquoise blue waters that paint a picture of sheer perfection. If you've ever wondered what heaven on Earth looks like, Whitehaven Beach is the answer.

For an unparalleled experience in Australia, consider taking a breathtaking seaplane tour over the Whitsundays and the iconic Great Barrier Reef.

Witnessing the emerald waters and pristine white sands from above will leave you in awe. The landscape you'll behold is a testament to the unparalleled beauty found in this extraordinary part of the world.

ARNHEM LAND

Arnhem Land, situated in the far northeast corner of Australia's Northern Territory, stands as one of the country's most treasured indigenous areas. To explore this remarkable region, securing a permit is essential, requiring an application at least 10 days in advance.

However, the effort and preparation involved in obtaining a permit are immensely rewarded, as Arnhem Land unveils untouched landscapes, rich Aboriginal culture, pristine beaches, and breathtaking tropical bush like no other place we have ever encountered.

Embarking on a trip to Arnhem Land requires a 4x4 vehicle and a true sense of adventure. Yet, the journey is truly worth it! Make sure not to miss the mesmerizing Turtle Beach, Maccassan Beach, and Little Bondi Beach on the captivating Gove Peninsula.

Among our most cherished experiences was immersing ourselves in the incredible aura of Bawaka. This journey demands courage, as it involves traversing some of the most thrilling off-road terrains we have ever encountered.

HUTT LAGOON (PINK LAKE IN AUSTRALIA)

Hutt Lagoon, also known as Pink Lake, is a truly Instagram-worthy destination that lives up to all the hype and stands as one of Australia's most unique attractions. Located approximately 5 hours from Perth, right in between Perth and Exmouth, Hutt Lagoon is an absolute must-see on your Western Australia road trip itinerary.

The mesmerizing pink color of the lake is a result of flourishing algae that thrives in its saline waters. However, as a natural phenomenon, the color can vary throughout the year, so it's advisable to check recent photos online before planning your visit.

Believe it or not, the vividness of the pink color is even more breathtaking in person, particularly on a cloudless, sunny day.

Make sure to allocate plenty of time for your visit to the lake. It adds extra travel time to your journey, and trust me, you'll want to spend a significant amount of time capturing the beauty of this place through your lens. While swimming is possible in the lake, be aware that the water is highly saline, so it's important to exercise caution and swim at your own risk.

FITZROY ISLAND

If you've always yearned for a taste of tropical island paradise, then make sure to include Fitzroy Island on your Cairns bucket list.

This idyllic island offers a plethora of activities that cater to all interests and preferences. Indulge in a blissful beach day at Nudey Beach, which earned the title of the best beach in Australia in 2018. For water enthusiasts, the island's reefs and turquoise waters are a haven for snorkeling, diving, and swimming adventures.

Immerse yourself in the kaleidoscope of colors that adorn the vibrant coral reefs, and keep your eyes peeled for the graceful presence of turtles. The Dive and Adventure centers also offer an array of water sports activities for those seeking an extra dose of excitement.

To witness the island's beauty from a different perspective, consider booking a sailing trip around Fitzroy Island. These trips often include delightful catering and refreshing drinks, ensuring a truly memorable experience. Alternatively, for those who prefer to explore on foot, I highly recommend embarking on a hike to the summit of Fitzroy.

Once you reach the top, you'll be rewarded with awe-inspiring 360-degree views of the island and the mesmerizing blue waters that surround it.

Australia is a country of unparalleled beauty. It boasts a multitude of extraordinary destinations, pristine beaches, enchanting islands, and unparalleled landscapes just waiting to be discovered.

Let the wonders of Australia captivate your imagination and ignite your desire to embark on an unforgettable adventure in this remarkable land.
